One of Only Three Internationally Selected Student-Led Experiments in the Summer 2026 Grassroots Experiment Internships
Bangata Village, Arusha District, Arusha, Tanzania
Some of the most meaningful lessons in life are not found in classrooms. They are discovered while listening to people, understanding their experiences, and recognizing that every community carries knowledge that deserves to be respected, shared and preserved.
This belief lies at the heart of the Bangata Knowledge Connectors, an inspiring student-led initiative that has brought five young women from Sakura Girls Secondary School into the heart of rural Tanzania—not as teachers or researchers arriving with predetermined answers, but as learners committed to listening before leading.
The Bangata Knowledge Connectors is one of only three student teams selected internationally for the Summer 2026 Grassroots Experiment Internships, a funded international programme created and led by Kubair Shirazee through Team Numu (ChangeCraft). The programme supports young people to design and lead practical community experiments that connect education with real-world challenges through curiosity, ethical engagement and local partnership.
This international selection reflects growing confidence in the ability of young people to lead meaningful community engagement and demonstrates that locally rooted ideas from rural Tanzania can contribute to global conversations on education, ethical leadership and sustainable development.
For Savannah Vision Tanzania (SVTa), this opportunity represents far more than participation in an international programme. Implemented through a partnership between Savannah Vision Tanzania and Sakura Girls Secondary School, the project places students alongside farming and livestock-keeping families in Bangata Village, where they will learn how knowledge is created, shared and applied within everyday community life.

Education That Extends Beyond School Walls
Education reaches its greatest potential when it prepares young people not only to pass examinations but also to understand people, appreciate different perspectives and contribute meaningfully to society. Instead of treating communities as places to collect information, the experiment recognises communities as equal partners in learning.
Preparing Before Taking the First Step
The first week was dedicated to preparation. The students developed a four-week implementation plan, interview guides, informed consent forms, ethical procedures and clear team responsibilities. Their guiding principle was simple: communities deserve to be heard before they are studied.
From Preparation to Partnership
The students will first meet the Bangata Village Executive Officer before beginning visits to selected farming and livestock-keeping households. Every conversation will focus on listening, learning and building trust rather than simply collecting information.
Girls Leading Community Learning
The Bangata Knowledge Connectors demonstrates how girls can become ethical leaders, community listeners and ambassadors for sustainable development. Each interaction strengthens their leadership, communication, teamwork and critical thinking skills while reinforcing the value of local knowledge.
Powered by Partnership
The Bangata Knowledge Connectors exists because of a shared commitment to education, ethical community engagement and youth leadership. Savannah Vision Tanzania extends its sincere appreciation to Kubair Shirazee for creating and leading the Summer 2026 Grassroots Experiment Internships through Team Numu (ChangeCraft). By selecting Bangata Knowledge Connectors as one of only three internationally funded student experiments, the programme has provided young women in rural Tanzania with an opportunity to lead meaningful community learning while contributing to global conversations about locally led development.
Meet the Student Knowledge Connectors
The first Bangata Knowledge Connectors cohort consists of Queen Selestine, Joyness Joseph, Lidya Lebayo, Naomi Chales and Mercy Ndekirwa. Together, these students represent a new generation of girls who are demonstrating that leadership begins with curiosity, humility and respect for community knowledge.
Local Leadership and Community Support
Savannah Vision Tanzania and Sakura Girls Secondary School thank the teaching staff, parents and guardians, the Bangata Village Government, the Village Executive Officer and the participating farming and livestock-keeping families. Their trust and partnership make this learning journey possible and ensure that the experiment is grounded in mutual respect and shared purpose.
Why This Experiment Matters
The Bangata Knowledge Connectors demonstrates that quality education extends beyond school walls. By combining ethical research, girls’ leadership and community partnership, the experiment helps students build practical skills while strengthening relationships between schools and rural communities. The lessons emerging from Bangata will inform future education, leadership and sustainable development initiatives.
Follow the Journey
Weekly updates, photographs, reflections and lessons learned will be published throughout the four-week experiment. We invite educators, researchers, development partners, schools and friends to follow the journey and share the students’ achievements.
