From Honey to Hope

Empowering Hadza Communities Through Sustainable Beekeeping

Building sustainable livelihoods, protecting biodiversity, and strengthening climate resilience in northern Tanzania.

Sustainable beekeeping is helping Hadza Indigenous communities build resilient livelihoods while conserving the forests that have sustained them for generations.

For generations, the Hadza people of northern Tanzania have lived in close harmony with nature. Their forests provide food, medicine, culture, and identity. Today, however, climate change, shrinking natural habitats, and limited livelihood opportunities threaten both their wellbeing and the ecosystems they have protected for centuries.

Savannah Vision Tanzania (SVTa) is working alongside Hadza communities to transform these challenges into opportunities through sustainable beekeeping. By combining indigenous knowledge with modern beekeeping practices, this initiative creates reliable income while conserving forests, supporting biodiversity, and strengthening climate resilience.

Every beehive represents more than honey—it represents hope, dignity, and a sustainable future.

Why Sustainable Beekeeping?

Sustainable beekeeping is one of the few livelihood activities that benefits both people and nature.

Healthy forests support healthy bee colonies.

Healthy bee colonies improve pollination.

Improved pollination strengthens biodiversity.

Healthy ecosystems produce quality honey.

Honey provides reliable household income.

For Hadza families, this creates a practical livelihood that protects the environment rather than degrading it.

Every hive becomes both an economic asset and a conservation tool.

Our Community-Led Approach

SVTa believes sustainable development succeeds when communities lead their own future.

Working alongside Hadza leaders and participating households, we provide:

  • Modern beehives and protective equipment
  • Practical beekeeping training
  • Honey harvesting and quality improvement
  • Business development and market access
  • Continuous technical mentoring
  • Community-led biodiversity conservation
  • Monitoring, evaluation, and long-term support

Rather than creating dependency, the project strengthens local capacity so communities continue benefiting long after external support has ended.

Expected Impact

With continued partnership and support, this initiative aims to:

  • Install 100 modern beehives
  • Train 60 women and young people
  • Support Hadza communities across three villages
  • Increase household income through honey production
  • Improve biodiversity through natural pollination
  • Strengthen climate resilience
  • Reduce pressure on indigenous forests
  • Build long-term community leadership
